Multiplicity

For this assignment, I chose to recreate the seven deadly sins, but in this photo, there are only six since Sloth overslept. The six sins are trying to have a family meeting, but all of them are seemingly in their own worlds due to their fatal flaws.

Individual Character Breakdown:
The man all the way to the left is Lust. Lust is characterized by their strong sexual desire and ignorance for more meaningful items. I displayed Lust in this photo by being shirtless, looking at themselves in a mirror, and focusing on nobody else except themselves. Lust is self-obsessed and will do anything to flaunt their body or looks, so I wanted to show that in the final photo.

The man standing next to the mirror is Pride. Pride is characterized by their excessive desire for themselves and ignorance of god. Similar to Lust, Pride is self-obsessed. Pride loves flashiness and making sure everybody in the room knows that they're the best. Pride is supposed to be the figurehead of the group; however, he falls through with this position for he's too caught up in his own ego. I communicate this through Pride overdressing for the occasion by being in a suit and ray bands and looking off to the sky "reminiscing" about his good ol' days.

The man sitting on the couch dressed in green is Envy. Envy is characterized by desiring another person's traits, status, abilities, or rewards for oneself. Envy, to me, has always been somebody who is judgemental at their root. While desiring the best of others, they are also critical of anything and everything around them. I communicated Envy's judgemental attitude by them staring at Wrath exerting their unnecessary anger on Gluttony. Envy is wearing green since it's commonly associated with the sin.

The man sitting on the couch dressed in red is Wrath. Wrath is characterized by a strong hatred and a desire for vengeance. Wrath is seen exerting its power and anger by holding an axe and threatening Gluttony. I believe it made sense to pitch Wrath and Gluttony against each other since it's easy for somebody filled with anger to hate on somebody enjoying themselves excessively. The two characters' sins are complete opposites so it would be a wasted opportunity not to have them interact with each other. Wrath's wardrobe consists of a bright red shirt symbolizing war and an axe giving a more blatant depiction of his leniency to turn to violence.

The man sitting on the floor dressed in brown is Gluttony. Gluttony is characterized by overconsumption of anything to the point of it being wasted. Gluttony is being attacked by Wrath in this photo but is unaware due to their desire for food and materialistic items around them. Gluttony being unaware makes sense for their sin in my mind and the fact that they are somehow still in their own world hits the nail on the head for me. Gluttony is wearing a bib to dive into the fact that he is obsessed with food.

Finally, the man lying down with the gold wings is Greed. Greed is characterized by an excessive desire for material possessions and wealth. Although Greed is not being interacted with, he is interacting with other characters trying to steal from them. Greed is pointing to Envy's chain to symbolize that that is the next item he wants to obtain. Greed is wearing gold wings to symbolize his power and obsession for materialistic items and how his search will never come to a close.

Creation Process:
Honestly, creating the image in Photoshop was not difficult; however, brainstorming the image in my head and coming up with individual ideas that would separate the character's personalities was by far the hardest part. I started out with this write-up during class.
I did generally stick to the ideas, but when I was in the actual room recording myself, it became much more up to the wind and what I felt was right instead of holding myself to my initial planning.

I also did a lot of preparation when it came to drawing out the scene which I did rely on a lot more.

Although my stick figures are not one to write in the history books... it did give me a nice understanding of what I wanted to do and what the general plan was. Lust and Pride ended up switching positions. Greed, Wrath, and Gluttony stayed in the same position with just minor changes, and Envy stayed the exact same. I colored-coded each of the characters with what I related their colors to and I generally stuck with all of the colors except Greed and Lust

My Takeaway:
I enjoyed this project and it was a nice experience to be able to take out a tripod for the first time from the Cage room. If I would redo the project I would make sure to position the camera a little farther back so I could have more room to work with and possibly put X's on the ground where all the previous characters were standing so they wouldn't step over each other and cause a conflict when I head to photoshop.
